Welcome to Women Making Art

Women Making Art started as a hashtag on IG back in February 2019.

I’d just returned home from a trip, where I visited numerous art museums and galleries, but saw very few works by women.

I should say I was frustrated, but in truth I was angry that this was still an issue, I wasn’t sure how I could help, but I knew I could start by creating something on social media.

I wanted to showcase art made by women, to celebrate the incredible skill, the imagination, the hard work, indeed the artistry that was so often overlooked or dismissed, simply because the artist who created the work was a woman.

#womenmakingart developed into the (no longer existing) WMA IG account, which became this website: womenmakingart.com, which sparked my interest in curation.

Whilst studying to become a curator I realised how crucial it is to document the art shows I attend.

Over the years many artworks by female artists have been misattributed to more well-known male artists. As well as numerous examples of women artists who are finally gaining recognition for their outstanding works, but these pieces were never kept track of and the originals are now lost.

In documenting these exhibitions, providing details on the artists and their work, I hope to bridge the gap between the temporary experience of the art show and their long-term cultural significance.

It’s not just about giving visibility to their work today, but about preserving it for the future.

The world has overlooked so many talented women for far too long, but by making these artists and their exhibitions part of the recorded history, we can help shift the narrative.

I hope that through my curation efforts and platforms like Women Making Art, we continue to inspire a new generation of female artists, ensuring that their work is seen, recognised, and remembered.
